The increasing ‘appearance’ of drone technology within the planosphere calls for an appropriate and adequate response by those for whom the former constitutes a threat. Here straight-forward discursive strategies (i.e. rational argument) are as useless as direct confrontation (what is there, afterall, to sabotage?). A counter-drone system is required, one that operates through the same logics and protocols but in reverse – which is to say, simply, that our starting point is the absence of fear, anxiety, etc. Increasingly the zone of confrontation (for drones) is not the visible but the invisible: the different planes of reality that are inaccessible to human-phenomes, at least, as they are presently constituted. This is not new news: mantra has always operated to conjure a certain this-ness from the void; to give shape to that which cannot be seen in terms of typical regimes of visuality – or cannot be articulated through the usual semiotic systems. There are many more things than are apparent and which, as yet, have no names. Myth-drone, then, is a drone, but one with a different intention. Running parallel to emergent technological drone systems, interfering at times with their coding, but ultimately, producing its own autonomous coding and consistency, myth-drone will use the means at its disposal (sounds and images) in order to build its own platforms: strange shapes and avatars will be summoned forth via monstrous couplings and unforeseeable conjunctions. To know in advance what this myth-drone is, would be to already capture – and, hence, to disable – its functioning. We do not know where we are going, but in a future yet to be determined we will know that we have been there. |
